“Japan was jubilant today after the International Whaling Commission voted to oppose the 1986 ban on commercial whaling…”Next to primates, whales are very highly evolved and intelligent mammals. They communicate, raise their young, socialize, and have complex feelings and relations. They are very harmless creatures (predominantly feed on microscopic plankton), never known to attack humans. Many species of these giants are on the verge of extinction. To justify whaling because fisherman need to feed their family is lame. With such lame excuses whales will become extinct. Every extinct creature we add to the list, highly disrupts the ecosystem and has much larger global consequences. For instance, killing whales (especially creatures as large as this, which constantly feed on tons of plankton) in one place my deprive the fish population in another (and what about those fishermen?). Times are changing. At one time livestock farmers had the same concerns about the increasing trend to vegetarian diets. Now many of these meat farmers are growing crops instead.
“If we can imagine a horse having two or three explosive spears stuck in its stomach and being made to pull a butcher’s truck through the streets of London while it pours blood into the gutter, we shall have an idea of the method of killing. The gunners themselves admit that if whales could scream the industry would stop, for nobody would be able to stand it.” (click here for full article)
