Mercury Waste
For past few years environmentalists in Tamil Nadu have been after a company that had leaked 22 tons of toxic mercury waste in Kodaikannal. For those who don’t know, even a minute presence of mercury is enough to permanently damage the land and devastate all life forms, and mercury once it gets in – stays in, and finds it way into rainwater runoffs.
A USA company, had set up a plant in Kodaikannal, where it manufactured components for a product that’s not even sold in India, but sent back to the USA. Why? Because of heavy environmental regulations in the USA (and thanks also to our irresponsible/ignorant politicians).
So this came as good news, from Yahoo News! “Mercury Waste From India Heads to U.S.” (“A ship carrying 320 tons of mercury contaminated waste…”)
